What is an Antibody Test?

Antibody tests rely on identifying the immune response of an individual. These antibody tests are important for establishing who has had the virus, especially because many people infected seem to show no symptoms (asymptomatic carriers), and to confirm hospital discharge.

Why choose Rapid Antibody Testing?

​

The specificity of the antibody test is important for avoiding “false positives” while the sensitivity is important for avoiding “false negatives,” in which the patient’s blood appears free of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 despite having previously been infected with it. There is a window period between virus infection and the production of IgM and IgG antibodies. So early on during infection, when we want to use rapid antibody tests for diagnosing COVID-19, we need a highly sensitive test.

How does Antibody Test work?

  • Sample collection: A blood draw or finger prick collects antibodies produced by immune cells

  • Detection: The test measures whether these antibodies bind to the novel coronavirus

  • What the test tells you: If you were infected in the past

  • Why it’s helpful: Identifies people who may have immunity and whose antibodies could be used to treat COVID-19 patients

ANTIGEN SWAB TESTING

Antigen tests detect viral proteins called antigens which are present in the COVID-19 virus. The antigens detected are identified only when the virus is actively replicating.

RT-PCR TESTING

This test diagnoses active coronavirus infection and shows if you have ever had COVID-19 or were infected with the coronavirus in the past. This test is typically highly accurate and usually does not need to be repeated.
